Overview
I'm starting off the "Album a Day" series with Kendrick Lamar's 2016 compilation album, Untitled Unmastered. This album definitely receives a lot of hate and bad reviews, as it is overshadowed by some of Kendrick's other projects, namely To Pimp a Butterfly and Good Kid, m.A.A.d City. And although this album probably isn't on the same tier as the aforementioned ones, I can honestly say I enjoyed it a lot. This album is made of many songs that didn't make the cut for To Pimp a Butterfly, and I loved the unfinished feeling of it. Don't get me wrong, I love a finished and carefully compiled album, but in Kendrick's case it was great to hear something more free and liberated.
Tracks That Stood Out
Untitled 02- This track was probably my favorite on the album, as it speaks about Kendrick's fight between his prideful and his humble selves. The juxtoposition in verses which speak about affluence and excess, versus ones about humility through religion, really make the track memorable and meaningful. One verse speaks about his diamonds all getting appraised, and another about how he feels "trapped in the belly of the beast". He also uses his fluctuating, almost voice crack-y rap tone in this track, similar to how he did in TPAB's U, which I enjoyed.
Untitled 08- The last track on the album, Untitled 08 had the best vibe on the album in my opinion. The beat was upbeat and the synth was refreshing as opposed to the jazzier samples used in the rest of the album. It was groovy, and the lyricism didn't disappoint.
The Rankings
Overall: 8/10- Even though this is probably Kendrick's worst album, it was really solid and is what you'd expect from one of the Hip-Hop G.O.A.Ts. I wish the album had more songs, and not as many voice "interludes".
Cover: 7/10-The cover was about as minimalist as humanly possible, but the color seemed to match the sound of the album and its simple design spoke to the simple compilation this album was.
Re-Listenability: 6/10- Although there were many great tracks on here, the album as a whole is somewhat hard to listen to all at once with some of the voice tracks. There were many songs that are repeat-worthy, but some others that I probably wouldn't listen to again soon.
